I'm GM Debbie, and I'm the owner of this Ragnarok Online game server. Before AnimaRO, I spent years looking for a great online multiplayer roleplaying game to play. But all of the games I came across had the same problems that I wanted to solve! So here's what I did... - My server is 100% FREE! Most of the servers out there are charging a monthly fee that most of us cannot afford. I want to give everyone access at absolutely no cost! You can invite your friends as well, without having to convince them to pay to play!
- You will rarely lag or get disconnected. Most free servers cannot get enough money to buy powerful enough computers to provide the players with a lagless, stable gaming experience. But thanks to generous donations from our players, we can buy better computers whenever we need to, so you won't have to endure laggy servers.
- Your characters are backed up daily. Many game servers are run by inexperienced staff, especially when it comes to the finer technical aspects of managing a server. They setup a server, and it runs fine for a while... but then disaster strikes. A hard disk fails, a database query goes awry, or a hacker wipes their data... and suddenly, all the characters and items on the server are destroyed, the players' hard work lost... FOREVER!
Here, in the unlikely (but possible!) event of a hard disk failure or other catastrophe, you will not lose more than 24 hours of work. We respect the hard work you put into your characters and work hard to preserve that.
- We only allow the best people on our staff. On many other servers, the staff members get hired easily and are not accountable to their players. They think that just because they are providing a gaming environment to the players for free, the players must worship them. But we recognize that if you play here, you are devoting your valuable time to us and thus deserve to be treated with respect, as much as a business should respect its paying customers.
- We are proactive in disciplining abusive players. It is difficult to build a friendly community of players who are generally polite to each other. We try to stop abuse problems before they spiral out of control and sour the gaming experience of other players.
- We rarely delete inactive accounts. Unlike many other servers, we understand that you may be unable to login to your accounts for months due to personal reasons. We promise not to delete inactive accounts for at least a year.
I became the owner of AnimaRO in August 2005. The server went through some hard times: It was a free server, but it cost me $340 per month to pay for the computers, and donations from players were far short of this amount. The previous server owners had to spend over 12 hours per day dealing with the issues that arise from running a game server, and had resigned since they couldn't balance this with their personal lives. Plus to top it all off, the server was reeling from a group of abusive players who had terrorized the community, causing many players to leave, and then got banned themselves, causing their friends to leave as well. To make things worse, the players' confidence in the staff was at an all time low. Several staff members had signed up purely for their own personal gain. One staff member spawned items for his female friends. Another one used his powers to cheat in events run by other staff so that his character would win. Another followed players he didn't like around while invisible to spy on them. One staff member even gave out his password to another player, who proceeded to spawn a huge amount of powerful equipment for his friends. When I took over the server, I fired all of the remaining abusive staff members. I even paid the server's bills out of pocket for two months, taking on the heavy workload of managing a server and keeping it alive through this crucial time. Gradually, more players joined the server and the donations became enough to sustain the server's bills. Ultimately, I worked to make AnimaRO a great place to play, learning from all the mistakes that I had seen other game servers make.
